according to the proposal of the document: Autonomous learning and English Language proficiency in a B.ed. in languages program; The authors took the Holec, Little and Benson´s definitions to give a sense to autonomy and autonomous learning in which: "Is defined as the capacity to take charge of, or responsibility for, one´s own learning. Autonomy is the natural tendency for learners to take control over their learning.” (Zorro,I. Baracaldo, D. Benjumea, A. 2005)
In the article, Mick Healey gives us standard definitions of "independent and autonomous learning", and "self-direct learning" in the field of ELT; as well as some characteristics and strategies to improve students' control over their own learning process.
It also presents the controversy between pedagogical approaches and opinions based on the topic Healey develop in the article.
